Here is an update from EcoMatters on reducing pollution:
“We started the walk-around last weekend and have talked to local people in their homes.
We have been very encouraged by the hospitality of the people of Piha and their willingness to welcome us into their homes and discuss issues related to their septic tanks.
We’ve learnt about the importance of the lagoon to many people – to play in, as a source of recreation (for kayaking, horses, lying around in), as a complex ecological system (with tuna (eels), baby inanga, beautiful little native scallops), and personally, we have been struck by the raw beauty of the place (we have a whole heap of lovely photos of the lagoon now, taken at different times).
We have also gathered important information from people, for instance several people have helped us to understand local watercourses better, which has slightly increased the number of people we would like to talk to.
There is certainly a lot of love for the lagoons and a desire to help with making the lagoons save to swim in all of the time. About half of the people we have talked to have taken up the offer of a free septic tank check.”
They will be having another door knocking day at Piha this Sunday 1st of March. They’re lovely people.
Remember they’re not passing any information to Council or the Local Board other than a summary of their findings so offer them a cuppa and have a good chat with them.
