Piha CoastCare hosted wetlands workshop

It was a great group of around 25 that met in the Piha Library for a ‘Wetlands Workshop’, hosted by Piha CoastCare, with  ecologist Shona Myers and Piha’s Jeff McCauley.

Wetland06We were treated to a wonderful talk by Shona looking at the ‘bigger picture’ following by Jeff McCauley who is superb with detail.

This was followed by field trip and then warm winter soup and yummy fresh bread.

Wetland Facts:

  • Wetlands once covered 2.4 million hectares – less that 250,000 hectares stay
  • Loss is greatest in the North Island: <5% stay
  • Rate and extent of loss among the highest in the world.

Photos below:  Field Trip: The weather was ghastly but good coats, umbrellas and good company warmed us all.  On the Eel Bridge Jeff found the smallest of plants and described it to us all.  Even Shona was very surprised that it was found in Piha.  Last three show ‘recommended reading’ for those interested in NZ’s valuable and endangered Wetlands.

There is a ‘field trip’ planned for later in the year to Whatipu wetlands.  If you’d like to keep in touch with these happenings by Piha CoastCare then ‘like’ their Facebook Page
