Piha Hook Ups – Piha Community on Facebook
“Boy racer smashes into barrier at midnight last night, pedestrians are meant to walk behind this” This was what was posted on ‘Hook-ups‘, Piha’s Community Facebook page, today.
Of course there was plenty of feedback and most was either damning of the pathetic pedestrian space on ‘the Hill’ and/or boy racers out here. But one in particular caught my eye: “This page is really disturbing and makes piha seem like some horrible little culty village where no one is safe but the locals.”
Unless people express their rage or concern, with photos, how are the rest of us to know how often it is happening around our Village? This is the power of social media. It’s with numbers and action that gets things moving.
Keep bringing it to everyone’s attention and phone *555 if you witness it. Hopefully we’ll have two outcomes
- NZ Police will do something about the problem. Speed bumps / speed camera / ???
- Auckland Transport will put some decent pedestrian protection in for all of us to feel safe behind these barriers before something ghastly happens
Report a problem to Auckland Transport and keep doing it. Again and again and again until something is done.

Can’t find the article on “Hook-ups.” Has it been removed?
Removed I guess because it was rubbish, A lot of local Facebook mass hysteria about a boy racer causing the damage with days of hand wringing, ranting and finger pointing.. turns out it was a slow moving visitor to Piha who either fell asleep or was distracted. Nothing to do with speed or boy racers. Certainly demonstrated the danger of believing what you read on facebook.
One thing that you can be sure of Boy Racers seem to be able to drive and use their phones and not crash like the mums with babies on board. As I have seen this week.
