New Local Board projects at Piha and Huia
From EcoMatters who is driving these projects.
The Waitakere Ranges Local Board is funding a new project that focuses on environmental weeds in Piha and Huia.
Environmental weeds greatly affect the forest’s capacity to sustain life in the Waitakere Ranges and even jeopardizes its existence in the future.
With this project we aim to build on previous work carried out by the Auckland Council Biosecurity team (Strategic Weed Initiative) by raising awareness and empowering the local community to take action and control environmental weeds on their property. We know that the only way of tackling environmental weeds in the Waitakere Ranges is by working together!
The project will start with a focus on climbing asparagus (Asparagus scandens) which has been identified as the greatest threat given its ability to invade mature forest because it can thrive in shady environments.
Please contact us if you would like any further information or are interested in getting involved!
You can also come chat with us this Saturday the 16/05 at the Piha Domain planting event from 10am- 1pm.
