Picnic in PihaLove our Lagoons – 8th Feb ’15  9.30 -3.00 pm at Piha Domain

Pack a picnic, slap on some sunblock and get ready to find out everything you need to know about Piha’s lagoon and stream.

The event schedule is:
  • 9.30 – Event Starts & Registration Opens
  • 10.00 – Guided Stream Walk 1 (approximately 45 minutes)
  • 11.00 – Water Testing Workshop 1 (approximately 30 minutes)
  • 12.00 – Guided Stream Walk 2 (approximately 45 minutes)
  • 13.00 – Water Testing Workshop 2 (approximately 30 minutes)
  • 14.00 – Guided Stream Walk 3 (approximately 45 minutes)
  • 15.00 – Event Finishes

You’ll learn all about the current water issues affecting the West Coast Lagoons, which impacts all Piha locals and the wider community. Plus, you’ll find what you can do to help keep the streams safe and swimmable.

Some of the other fun activities include guided walks and talks about the fish in the stream, water testing and even some critter watching. There will also be a number of stalls with loads of educational information for you to check out.

Experts will be on hand to answer any questions about the local wildlife, septic tanks and other issues. And, if you forget your lunch they’ll have a tasty sausage sizzle to keep everyone fed.

Phil Brown, Auckland Council’s Land and Water Advisory Team Manager says: “The Piha stream has a range of fascinating native fish living in it. It’s the only place around Auckland where we know lamprey live. I think people would be surprised at what’s living in the stream at their doorstep.”

The event is organised by Auckland Council’s Environmental Services Unit in partnership with Eco Matters and Piha CoastCare.  More information will be available soon on the Love Our Lagoons Facebook page where you will also be able register in advance for the activities.

Lagoon pollution Piha

Further to the workshop held on 15th August at the Arataki Centre on the issues affecting the West Coast Lagoons, we (Auckland Council’s Environmental Services Unit) are planning an event for Monday 8th February (Waitangi Day observed) and invite interested parties to get involved.

Love our LagoonsThe event will take place during the day at Piha Domain and aims to connect people to their waterways and raise awareness of the issues affecting the lagoons. The focus will be on the Piha Lagoon, however many of the issues affecting the lagoon are the same for the Karekare and Te Henga/Bethells Beach lagoons.

The event will include a range of stalls with information about the values of the stream and lagoon and the challenges they face.  This will be complemented by walks and talks on the fish in the stream, some water testing, critter watching and perhaps a tour of the council wastewater system etc.

Love our Lagoons PihaWe would love for community groups or organisations who have a related interest to help us deliver the event. If you are interested in having a stall or running an activity, please get in touch with me. We are also seeking local volunteers who would like to work alongside Council staff to help plan the event.

I will keep you informed as we firm up plans, but in the meantime please get in touch if you would like to be involved.   Email Cliff Wilton @ cliff.wilton@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

How about putting in some signage to warn visitors about the fluctuating health hazard so that they can be read from the carpark or on either side of the bridge? Is it or is it not a health hazard identified and therefore responsibility has to be taken……
