Coastal Walk – White’s Beach and More
Piha CoastCare – Ideal for families with children aged about 7 upwards
Piha CoastCare’s Spring walk will take place on Sunday November 13th. We will walk from the Barnett Hall car park, along North Piha Beach and up to Te Waha Point where we will learn about the endangered White Faced Petrels that have established breeding burrows there.
Left: Memorial stone marking the site of the original Anawhata Hut built by members of the Auckland University College Field Club in the late 1920’s
We will then go on down to White’s Beach where we will see how undisturbed Spinifex dunes are maintaining themselves, even after recent severe storm damage.
After a picnic lunch (bring your own!) the more intrepid trampers will make their way up to the Fisherman’s Rock Ridge, and on to the site of the original Anawhata Hut built by Auckland University College Field Club members in the later 1920’s. Others may prefer to take the easier route, up to Anawhata Road via Rose’s Track and home via White’s track.
The full trip is suitable for people with a moderate degree of fitness, a reasonable head for heights and suitable footwear. The alternative return trip covers much easier terrain and is suitable for anyone happy to walk to White’s beach.
