The Waitakere Ranges Local Board offers $2500 subsidy
The Waitakere Ranges Local Board is proposing the following:
“The West Coast Lagoons Septic Tank Upgrade Subsidy is a non-regulatory incentive programme introduced by the Waitakere Ranges Local Board to address water quality issues identified in the lagoons on the west coast of Auckland at Karekare, Piha, North Piha and Te Henga (Bethells).
The West Coast Lagoons Septic Tank Upgrade Subsidy allows home owners living in the communities of Karekare, Piha and Te Henga to apply for a subsidy of $2,500 from the Waitakere Ranges Local Board to help pay for the cost of upgrading their septic tank system.
The West Coast Lagoons Septic Tank Upgrade Subsidy scheme reimburses applicants for part of the cost of replacing their existing primary treatment septic tank (i.e. old technology) once they have been granted building consent for an improved system by Auckland Council.
For the 2015/2016 financial year a subsidy of $2,500 is available.
To be eligible for the West Coast Lagoons Septic Tank Upgrade Subsidy
- You must have already received consent from council to install a new waste water system.
- You must be up to date with your property rates
- You must not have been issued with an Auckland Council abatement notice or other council directives requiring you to upgrade your septic tank system
This item is on the WRLB Agenda 14/5/15 to be confirmed
Further to Sandra’s comment below here is a photo of ‘Water overland flow’ diagram – interesting
Bobbie, some changes were made to what you have above. This subsidy is only available for people whose properties are in the catchments of the streams that are contributing to pollution of the lagoons, at Piha, this means Piha Stream. This is going to be mapped so when we go out with the offer, people will be able to see whether they qualify. There is %50,000 available for each of the next 3 years. It comes into force 1 July.
Sandra Coney, Chair, WRLB
Is it not available to catchment areas of North Piha Lagoon and Moana Stream Sandra?
Areas are yet to be mapped, but will include N Piha (Marawhara) lagoon, but not Moana. No testing has been done in Moana to know water quality

So that’s 60 houses that will receive subsidies. Total $150k.
